What Is Length Standard Calibration & Why Does It Matter?

Gauge blocks and length bars are the foundation of your entire measurement chain. If a gauge block is out of tolerance, every instrument set with it will be wrong. Length standard calibration measures actual deviation from nominal under controlled temperature conditions per ISO 3650.

Measure

Actual length measured interferometrically or with NPL-traceable comparator at 20°C per ISO 3650.

Grade Check

Deviation, flatness, and parallelism assessed. Grade compliance (K, 0, 1, 2) confirmed.

Certify

NABL CC-2480 certificate with actual length and uncertainty — the root of your traceability chain.

Calibration Process — Step by Step

Intake & Cleaning

Length standard received, cleaned, visually inspected for surface damage. Grade and material documented.

Temperature Soak

Standards soaked at 20±0.5°C for 24 hours (gauge blocks) per ISO 3650 thermal equilibrium requirements.

As-Found Measurement

Length measured with interferometry or NPL-traceable reference comparator at multiple points. As-found data recorded.

Surface & Wringing Check

Surface finish, flatness, and parallelism assessed. Wringing quality verified (for gauge blocks).

05

As-Left Verification

Final length measurement confirmed. Deviation from nominal recorded. Grade compliance determined per ISO 3650.

NABL Certificate

NABL CC-2480 certificate with actual length, deviation, uncertainty (k=2), ISO 3650 traceability — ILAC MRA recognized.
